The Azores Government Council today approved the allocation of 6.5 million euros to compensate for income losses in fishing. The amount will be distributed until 2028 and is specifically intended to mitigate the economic impacts suffered by fishermen due to the implementation of marine protected areas in the region.

In a statement, the Regional Government of the Azores, formed by the PSD/CDS-PP/PPM coalition, announced the approval of the creation of a Compensation Mechanism for professionals in the fishing sector affected by these environmental restrictions.

This measure comes as a response to the financial difficulties faced by the Azorean fishing community, which sees its traditional fishing grounds limited by the creation of marine protected areas in the autonomous region.
