Burns were responsible for 2,255 of the 6,893 hospitalizations of children and adolescents from 0 to 14 years old due to accidents in Rio de Janeiro in 2025, representing 32.7% of unintentional injury cases in the period. The survey was conducted by the Safe Children Project of SOS Children's Villages, based on data from the Ministry of Health.
According to the study, burns have become one of the main points of attention in the State, due to the high number of hospitalizations. The organization alerts to the need for prevention measures aimed at this type of domestic accident.
Despite the high frequency, burns ranked second among the causes of hospitalization. Falls remain the main cause of hospitalizations due to accidents among children and adolescents in Rio de Janeiro, with 2,598 hospitalizations in 2025, corresponding to 37.7% of the state total.
The survey also identified 591 hospitalizations due to another type of injury not specified in the article.
