A new fraud through the Bizum application is allowing criminals to empty the bank accounts of elderly people in Spain without them realizing. The method exploits the trust that elderly people place in those around them, becoming a gateway for economic abuse.
The Guardia Civil and various police investigations have revealed a concerning pattern in recent years, with elderly people losing thousands of euros. The perpetrators of these crimes have access to the homes, mobile phones, bank cards, or accounts of the elderly, which facilitates the execution of the frauds.
The Bizum instant transfer system, which allows money to be sent quickly and easily through a mobile phone, is being exploited by these criminals to carry out unauthorized transactions. The victims, often due to lack of familiarity with technology or because they trust the perpetrators, only realize the theft when it is already too late.
