PJ alerts for false tax refund! Be aware

SAPO Notícias10 September 2026 at 15:00

The Judicial Police has issued an alert regarding a new campaign of fraudulent communications that improperly use the name and branding of the Tax and Customs Authority. The goal of these messages is to deceive Portuguese taxpayers into believing they are official communications regarding income tax refunds.

The scheme involves sending messages that mimic the appearance of genuine communications from the Tax and Customs Authority, exploiting citizens' trust in the State's tax services. Scammers use the promise of tax refunds as bait to obtain victims' personal and financial data.

The PJ recommends that taxpayers be vigilant and always verify the authenticity of communications received, being suspicious of messages that request personal or banking details via email or SMS. It is advisable to access the Finance Portal directly through the official website to confirm any information regarding refunds.
