The Pederneira Funicular, in Nazaré, should open to the public in January 2027, creating a public transport connection between the upper area of the town and the beach. The project represents an investment of 10 million euros, fully funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan, and will have the capacity to transport up to 300 people per hour in each direction. Each trip can carry 40 passengers.

According to the president of the Nazaré City Council, Serafim Silva, all construction work is practically completed, with the work ending at the end of August. However, before opening to the public, it will be necessary to carry out tests and obtain equipment certifications, tasks that the municipality expects to complete by the end of the year.

The funicular will be about 200 meters long and includes access for people with reduced mobility and bicycle transport. The support building will have four floors with glass openings, allowing users to observe the landscape during the trip. The exterior lighting will be designed to evoke the image of a lighthouse at night.

The municipality explained that the objective of the investment is to provide sustainable public transport, reducing automobile dependence and cutting short car journeys and greenhouse gas emissions. The concession support contract was signed in November 2023 and the tender was launched in February 2024.

ECB interest rate hike increases pressure on mortgage payments, Deco PROteste warns

The European Central Bank (ECB) raised interest rates by 0.25 basis points, setting the deposit rate at 2.5%, which will increase pressure on Portuguese families with mortgage loans, Deco Proteste warned. The 6-month Euribor, the most used in Portugal, has risen 26% since the beginning of the Middle East conflict, and 12-month Euribor approached 3% in August. The association recommends that consumers check their payment review dates, simulate different scenarios, and consider alternatives such as renegotiation or transferring the loan to another institution.
