Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca, 20 years old and currently ranked 26th in the world, is close to returning to the courts after an abdominal injury that kept him out of competition. The young athlete withdrew from the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season, but will receive a new opportunity to compete on September 18 and 19, when he will play in the Davis Cup at Farmasi Arena, in Rio de Janeiro.
The Rio de Janeiro stage of the Davis Cup will be special for Fonseca, as it will mark his return to his hometown in an international competition wearing the Brazilian jersey. The opponent of the Brazilian national team will be Switzerland. After this competition, the tennis player will resume the 2026 season on the ATP circuit, with his first opportunity to score points in the world ranking at the ATP 500 in Tokyo, Japan, held in late September.
João Fonseca has not stepped on the court since August 16, when he defeated Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters 1000. With nearly a month away, the Brazilian will lose two positions in the ATP ranking and drop to 28th place, with 1,750 points. The young tennis player has been struggling with physical issues in 2026, which has compromised his sequence of matches on the professional circuit.
