The Sistema Volta collected more than 305 million single-use beverage packages in the first five months of operation, since April 10. The number of packages tripled in the last two months, demonstrating growing participation from citizens in the deposit and refund system managed by SDR Portugal.

The president of SDR Portugal, Leonardo Mathias, highlighted that reaching 305 million packages returned in just five months represents an extraordinary milestone and demonstrates the strong participation of Portuguese citizens in the system. The current average return rate is around five million packages per day, equivalent to more than 3,400 packages per minute.

The Sistema Volta collection network currently has 3,000 automatic Volta Points in supermarkets and hypermarkets, as well as manual solutions for neighborhood stores. The system also has seven Kiosks in operation, located in Albufeira, Barcelos, Cascais, Funchal, Ponta Delgada, Portimão, and Vila Nova de Famalicão, with five more contracted in the municipalities of Almada, Aveiro, Mafra, Oeiras, and Vila do Conde.

The system covers single-use beverage packages up to three liters, including plastic bottles and aluminum and steel cans. For each package returned under the specified conditions, the consumer receives a deposit value of 0.10 euros. The goal of SDR Portugal is to reach 50 Kiosks across the country.

"Uncertainty that 'changes things overnight' prevents Lagarde from signaling next step"

The European Central Bank (ECB) raised interest rates by 25 basis points on Thursday, unanimously and "obviously", but President Christine Lagarde firmly refused to signal the next steps, explaining that the high level of geopolitical uncertainty prevents any future path from being anticipated. "We are not taking a position on the direction to follow at our next meeting," she stated, emphasizing that all discussions focused solely on that day's decision. Lagarde reiterated, however, the ECB's commitment to meeting the 2% inflation target, although the new projections show the ECB no longer expects to reach this target before 2028, now forecasting inflation of 3% this year, 2.5% in 2027, and 2.1% in 2028. Regarding the recent rise in sovereign debt yields, the president noted that it is a global phenomenon, not specific to the euro area, and recalled the separation of roles between markets and the ECB.
