Wall Street opens in the 'red'

Jornal Económico10 September 2026 at 14:51

New York opened Thursday's session in negative territory, after the release of the producer inflation report which showed an acceleration in the general indices for August. The Dow Jones index fell 0.32% to 52,214.87 points, the S&P500 dropped 0.51% to 7,597.01 points and the Nasdaq lost 0.77% to 26,050.54 points. Among the companies with the biggest declines were Nvidia, which fell 2.06%, IBM with 1.73% and Honeywell with 1.37%, while Apple stood out with a gain of 2.37%.

Market analyst at Millennium Investment Banking, Ramiro Loureiro, pointed out that Wall Street started the session lower in a session marked by the surge in oil prices, which surpassed 100 dollars per barrel for crude, due to increasing tensions in the Middle East. According to the analyst, Iran and the US are preparing for a prolonged war, with few signs of a ceasefire in the short term.

Investors showed concern about the worsening of inflationary pressures, after statements by ECB President Christine Lagarde that inflation will remain above the 2% target for an extended period of time. The European Central Bank raised the eurozone benchmark rates by 25 basis points, and US producer prices increased slightly more than expected in August, growing 5.4% compared to the same month in 2025.

In the oil market, Texas WTI rose 3.44% to 99.43 dollars per barrel and Brent gained 3.41% to 104.66 dollars. In the foreign exchange market, the euro depreciated 0.10% against the dollar, settling at 1.1618 dollars.

"Uncertainty that 'changes things overnight' prevents Lagarde from signaling next step"

The European Central Bank (ECB) raised interest rates by 25 basis points on Thursday, unanimously and "obviously", but President Christine Lagarde firmly refused to signal the next steps, explaining that the high level of geopolitical uncertainty prevents any future path from being anticipated. "We are not taking a position on the direction to follow at our next meeting," she stated, emphasizing that all discussions focused solely on that day's decision. Lagarde reiterated, however, the ECB's commitment to meeting the 2% inflation target, although the new projections show the ECB no longer expects to reach this target before 2028, now forecasting inflation of 3% this year, 2.5% in 2027, and 2.1% in 2028. Regarding the recent rise in sovereign debt yields, the president noted that it is a global phenomenon, not specific to the euro area, and recalled the separation of roles between markets and the ECB.
