The battle to keep radio in cars has already begun

SAPO Notícias10 September 2026 at 14:15

The battle to keep radio in cars has already begun. The broadcasting sector is fighting a dispute to ensure that AM/FM radio receivers continue to be installed in vehicles, at a time when the automotive industry is transitioning to electric vehicles and digital systems.

Radio in automobiles is seen as an essential tool in crisis situations. During emergencies, natural disasters, or communication outages, radio remains one of the only available means of information, working even when other networks fail.

This battle arises in a context where several automobile manufacturers have been removing radio receivers from their most recent models, especially electric vehicles, which favor internet-based connectivity systems and digital interfaces.

Broadcast industry associations have warned that the removal of radio from automobiles represents a risk to public safety, arguing that regulators should impose the mandatory maintenance of this technology in new vehicles.
