"It's not just a party, it's an economic business". Creator of Rock in Rio asks Portugal and Brazil governments for alliance in investing in major events

RTP Notícias10 September 2026 at 14:50

Roberto Medina, founder of Rock in Rio, defended in an interview with RTP a strategic alliance between the governments of Portugal and Brazil to invest in major events as a way of boosting tourism in both countries. Medina considered that these festivals represent not only entertainment, but constitute an economic business of great relevance.

The creator of Rock in Rio praised the new Lisbon home of the event at Parque Tejo, expressing satisfaction with the infrastructure created in Lisbon to host the festival. This approval comes in the context of the international expansion of the event to the Portuguese capital.

In the interview, Medina recalled that Rock in Rio was originally born in 1985 with the objective of celebrating Brazil's re-democratization, representing a cultural and political milestone in the country's history. This memory demonstrates the historical connection between the event and social transformations in Brazil.

Goodbye walks: a funicular will be inaugurated on this date that will give you a 'lift' to this beach without having to walk kilometers on foot

The Pederneira Funicular, in Nazaré, should open in January 2027, creating a public transport connection between the upper area and the beach. With about 200 meters in length and an investment of 10 million euros fully funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan, the equipment will have the capacity to transport up to 300 people per hour in each direction, with capacity for 40 passengers per trip. The works are practically completed, but tests and certifications need to be completed by the end of the year. The project includes accessibility for people with reduced mobility and bicycle transport, aiming to reduce automobile dependence and greenhouse gas emissions. The four-story building will have glass openings and lighting that will evoke the image of a lighthouse at night.
