The Icelandic government intends to ban whale hunting in the country. The measure would leave only Japan and Norway as the only countries that still practice this commercial activity.
Currently, only one Icelandic company continues to carry out whale hunting. However, the business is no longer profitable, which makes the activity economically unviable.
Despite this, the fishing industry lobby in Iceland is described as powerful, which suggests that the ban may face political resistance in the country.
