Australia wants to give users control over social media algorithms

Público10 September 2026 at 13:37

Australia is considering legislation that would force social media companies to give users more control over the algorithms that determine the content shown to them on their platforms.

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri spoke out against this measure, stating that he does not believe the app is "addictive" as some critics suggest.

Mosseri defended that algorithms are necessary to improve user experience and argued that in a world without algorithms, users would have a worse experience on social media.

The executive's position comes in response to growing regulatory pressure in Australia, where the government seeks to give users more power to control how content is filtered and recommended on platforms.
