The municipality of Mirandela will create five refuges to face extreme heat. The joining of the network began in July and the refuges will feature vegetation, drinking fountains, rest areas and air conditioning. The announcement was made by Vítor Correia, mayor of Mirandela, to VTM.
Due to the high temperatures experienced in the municipality during summer, with values that often approach 50°C, the municipality intends to transform five spaces into climate refuges. The selected locations are the Estação das Artes, the Ecoteca, the Ribeira de Carvalhais Park, the Parque do Império and the Pine forest next to Escola Secundária Luciano Cordeiro.
The objective is to strengthen tree planting and vegetation, install or improve benches and drinking fountains, and create shaded areas for rest and comfort for people and animals. The mayor stated that it is necessary to guarantee these refuges to the population during moments of greatest heat, noting that the municipality is at the epicenter of the Hot Land.
