Carlos Cortes, President of the Portuguese Medical Association, publicly criticized the lack of ambition in the measures to strengthen the National Health Service. The official expressed concern about the insufficiency of the objectives set for improving healthcare in Portugal.
The president argued that the Executive should set as a goal to guarantee a family doctor for all Portuguese citizens, considering that the current coverage target of just over 80% of the population is clearly insufficient.
Carlos Cortes emphasized that universal access to primary healthcare should be an absolute priority, arguing that millions of Portuguese citizens continue without an assigned family doctor. This situation represents, according to the official, a serious failure in the public health system.
