Sintra removes 98 thousand cigarette butts from the municipality's beaches

Jornal de Mafra10 September 2026 at 11:42

More than 98 thousand cigarette butts were removed from Sintra's beaches by young people from Voluntariado Sintra Jovem, during an active citizenship action throughout the summer. This cleanup aimed to reinforce the protection of Sintra's coastline.

The action took place at the beaches of São Julião, Magoito, Maçãs, Grande and Adraga, where dozens of volunteers dedicated themselves to removing this highly polluting waste, contributing to the environmental preservation of these coastal areas.

The article highlights the scale of the environmental impact of cigarette butts, noting that each butt contains around 4 thousand toxic substances, many of which are highly dangerous, and is mostly composed of synthetic fibers with a lifespan of 12 to 20 years.

In addition to collecting cigarette butts, the young volunteers recovered beach toys for the Rebrinca project and ran the Eco Ball Game, promoting reuse, recycling and responsible environmental behaviors among beach users.
