Russiagate. Lisbon City Hall sentenced to pay over 463 thousand euros for sharing data of anti-Putin activists

SAPO Notícias10 September 2026 at 11:06

Lisbon City Hall was sentenced to pay 463,700 euros for sharing personal data of anti-Putin activists with Russian authorities. The ruling was issued within the framework of the case known as Russiagate.

The case dates back to 2021, the period when Fernando Medina, from the Socialist Party, was leading the Lisbon municipality as president.

The data sharing allegedly endangered the safety of the activists who opposed Vladimir Putin's regime, exposing their identities and locations to Russian authorities.

The multimillion-euro compensation aims to cover the damages caused by the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information that should have been protected.

Maria Luís Albuquerque 'pressures' governments to save complementary pension reform

The European Commissioner for Financial Services, Maria Luís Albuquerque, intervened before the European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs to push for political agreements by the end of the year on three priority files: the capital markets integration and supervision package, the complementary pension reform, and securitization. Albuquerque criticized the Council's retreat in ambition on the complementary pension reform, warning that if the final result is too timid, Europe will lose yet another opportunity to deliver real value to citizens. The commissioner defended that mobilizing private capital is essential for European competitiveness and strategic autonomy, emphasizing that success will be measured by what works in practice, not by promises.
