The Chinese influencer Ganfan Yingying, whose real name was Chen Ziyi, died at 24 on August 17 after a series of health complications. The death was confirmed by her parents to the Chinese newspaper Global Times. The official cause has not yet been released by authorities.
Yingying had more than 1.2 million followers and became known for producing mukbang videos, a format that emerged in South Korea in the late 2000s. The term comes from the combination of the Korean terms muk-da, which means "to eat," and bang-song, which means "broadcast." In this type of content, the creator eats large quantities of food in front of cameras while chatting and interacting with the audience.
Recently, the influencer had reported on her social media a sharp drop in blood potassium levels. In her last post, she reported that her potassium was below normal, which may have contributed to the health complications that led to her death.
