The number of requests for international protection submitted in the European Union declined significantly in the first half of the year, decreasing 17% compared to the previous period. This drop brought asylum request numbers back to the levels recorded in 2021.
The data was released today by the European Asylum Agency (EAA), responsible for the collection and analysis of statistics related to migration and requests for international protection in EU member states.
This decline represents a reversal of the growth trend that had been observed in recent years, with numbers stabilizing again at the pre-pandemic 2021 values.
