The Assembly of the Republic rejected an initiative that could open the way to new political instability. Deputy Francisco Figueira, elected by the Electoral Circle of Évora, stated that this decision is essential to avoid a "permanent electoral frenzy" which, according to him, does not contribute to solving the concrete problems of the Portuguese people's lives.
Francisco Figueira considers that political stability is fundamental so that the country can move forward and focus on the issues that really matter to citizens. The rejection of this initiative allows maintaining the political course without threats of new legislative elections.
In the last seven years, Portugal has been called four times to legislative elections, resulting in governments with a duration of less than two years. This prolonged instability has been a constant concern in the national political scene.
With this rejection, Parliament guarantees the continuity of the current executive and temporarily removes the risk of new early elections, providing a period of greater governmental stability.
