France: contraceptive with desogestrel prompts tumor alert to 1.6 million women

Euronews Portugal10 September 2026 at 09:50

The Medicines Agency of France (ANSM) issued an alert regarding a contraceptive containing desogestrel, warning approximately 1.6 million women who use this contraceptive method about a possible tumor risk.

ANSM recommends that women taking this medication consult a doctor if they present symptoms such as persistent headaches, visual disturbances or memory loss.

The alert follows concerns raised by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) regarding the safety of this type of contraceptive and its potential link to tumor development.

French health authorities are monitoring the situation and informing women about the warning signs that should prompt immediate medical consultation.

Hubble and James Webb discover small worlds "frozen in time" with memory of the past

New observations from the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes revealed that some of the smallest and most distant objects in the Solar System still preserve clues about their formation, billions of years ago. These small worlds, described as "frozen in time", provide valuable information about the conditions that existed at the beginning of our planetary system.

Discovery in Thailand of new peculiar plant species with "diabolical" appearance that does not perform photosynthesis

Scientists discovered in Thailand a new plant species called Thismia daemona, which is distinguished by not performing photosynthesis due to the absence of chlorophyll, obtaining its nutrients through the extraction of fungi that live underground. This peculiar plant spends most of its life hidden under layers of dead leaves in Thai forests and has a distinctly "diabolical" appearance, which gave it its scientific name.

AI-designed drug reduces biological age in modest clinical trial

A clinical trial with 42 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis demonstrated that a drug developed with artificial intelligence managed to reduce the patients' biological age. Six independent protein-based biological clocks indicated a younger appearance, with the strongest signal observed after four weeks using an intermediate dose of the drug.
