Discovery in Thailand of new peculiar plant species with "diabolical" appearance that does not perform photosynthesis

SAPO Notícias10 September 2026 at 09:52

A new plant species was discovered in Thailand by researchers. The plant was named Thismia daemona and is distinguished by having a peculiar appearance that was described as "diabolical".

Unlike most plants, Thismia daemona does not have chlorophyll, which means it does not perform photosynthesis. Instead, the plant extracts its nutrients from fungi that live underground.

This plant spends most of its life hidden under layers of dead leaves that fall from trees in the forests where it grows. This characteristic makes its discovery particularly rare and difficult.

The discovery of this species represents a rare example of a plant that depends entirely on other sources to obtain the nutrients necessary for its survival, instead of producing them through sunlight as conventional plants do.

50% of people with migraine self-medicate and 12% use opioids to relieve pain

A new study by the Headache Study Group of the Spanish Neurology Society revealed that 50% of people with migraine, more than six million Spaniards, self-medicate with analgesics without a medical prescription, and 12.7% use opioids. Neurologists warn that both practices are "highly inadvisable" due to the risk of developing medication overuse headaches and favoring the chronification of the disease.

The error of drinking coffee upon waking up and the reason why it causes afternoon tiredness

Drinking coffee upon waking up is considered a biological error because it coincides with the natural cortisol peak in the body, the hormone that naturally keeps the body awake. When caffeine is consumed at this time, the body develops tolerance more quickly, which can result in afternoon tiredness. The article explains the role of cortisol and adenosine, and suggests that the ideal time for the first cup of coffee is when cortisol levels begin to drop, usually between 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM, or after lunch.

"Invasive Fish in Meimão Reservoir" Discussed Management of Invasive Species

The Meimão bathing area hosted an initiative dedicated to the management of invasive species in the Meimão Reservoir, organized by the LIFE PREDATOR project and the Municipality of Penamacor. The event featured a four-year study on invasive fish, which revealed that 85% of the fish caught in the reservoir are exotic or invasive exotic species, with the wels catfish being the main concern. The study, which involved surveys of around 400 fishermen and partnerships with FCUL and research centers, warned that eradication of the species is impossible, but emphasized the importance of its control. The need for awareness-raising, actions with the school community, and culinary valorization of the catfish was highlighted, with the program ending with a river fish tasting prepared by Chef Rui Cerveira.
