A fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon at the nursing home of the Centro Paroquial de Promoção Social e Cultural de Darque, in Viana do Castelo. The fire started at 4:16 PM and was declared extinguished at 4:49 PM. According to mayor Fabíola Oliveira, the fire started on a canvas of construction work that was ongoing in the building.
The 75 elderly people affected by the fire were relocated to the nearby nursery of the building hit by the fire. Of these, 33 were residents of the nursing home and 42 were users of continuing care. By 8:10 PM, all elderly people were already accommodated to spend the night.
Fabíola Oliveira highlighted the readiness with which the nursing home acted after the alert, applying the lessons from the drills that have been carried out. The elderly should return to their usual facilities already on Thursday.
