Social media concentrates 90% of cases of promotion of illegal gambling detected during the World Cup

SAPO Notícias10 September 2026 at 09:20

The Portuguese Association of Online Betting and Gaming (APAJO) identified 500 cases of promotion of unlicensed online gambling operators in Portugal during the 2026 Football World Cup. The organization focused its monitoring during this major sporting event, which attracts a significant increase in online betting and gaming.

Social media concentrated the overwhelming majority of these illegal activities, representing 90% of the total detected cases. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and others were the main channels used to promote these unauthorized operators.

APAJO warned of the risks associated with these unlicensed operators, which operate outside Portuguese regulations. Consumers who use these services are left unprotected in terms of financial security, personal data protection and dispute resolution mechanisms.

This phenomenon arises in a context where Portugal has been strengthening oversight of the online gambling sector, which is subject to licensing by Reguladorbet. The identification of these 500 cases during the World Cup demonstrates the scale of the problem of illegal gambling promotion in the country.

Idle savings cost Portuguese families hundreds of euros per year, says Revolut

A Revolut study reveals that Portuguese families hold 89.1 billion euros in current account deposits, losing approximately 706 euros annually for every 10,000 euros in potential earnings by not investing in diversified markets. The institution warns that, with one-year deposit rates around 2% and inflation at 2.2%, idle money loses real purchasing power, and that mobilizing these savings for investments could generate 6.3 billion euros in annual growth capital. The study, which surveyed 1,000 adults in Portugal, identifies inertia, lack of financial literacy, and fragmentation of financial services as the main barriers to investment, with 44% of respondents unable to correctly assess the relationship between returns and inflation. The European Commission, represented by Maria Luís Albuquerque, has defended that keeping money in the bank results in losses, echoing the conclusions of the European Wealth Erosion Index.

The reform plan that makes those who pay your salary tremble

This article analyses the concept of Coast FI (Financial Independence on the Coast) as a strategy for Portuguese people to face uncertainty about retirement, in a context of growing challenges for Portuguese Social Security, including low birth rates, increasing longevity and modest salaries. The article presents a practical formula for calculating how much to save now to achieve retirement goals, while warning of risks such as market volatility, inflation and the illusion that the State will solve everything on its own. It argues that although Social Security remains essential, it does not constitute a complete personal financial plan, and that everyone should develop their own retirement strategy, starting as early as possible.

Taxis can now operate as Uber and Bolt. What changed?

Since September 1, 2026, taxis in Portugal can operate through the TVDE regime, used by platforms like Uber and Bolt, thanks to Law No. 59/2026. This legislation allows operators and licensed vehicles as taxis to also provide TVDE services, as long as they meet the licensing requirements. Although the same vehicle can be enabled for both regimes, it cannot simultaneously benefit from the advantages of each one — when working as TVDE, it cannot pick up passengers on the street or use taxi ranks. The law also simplifies the process for taxi drivers to obtain TVDE certification and introduces new rules, such as non-removable identification badges, possibility of video recording for security (with consent), and the elimination of the maximum cap for dynamic pricing. The new pricing rules for traditional taxis take effect in October 2026.
