Inflation rises to 3.3% in August

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Portugal reached 3.3% in August, representing a rise of 0.3 percentage points compared to July, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE). Fuels were the main driver of this acceleration, while underlying inflation stood at 2.6%. The energy products aggregate registered a year-on-year increase of 12.2%. The Transport and Restaurants and accommodation services sectors were the biggest positive contributors to the index variation, contrary to the areas of Information and communication and Clothing and footwear. The Harmonized Consumer Price Index (HCPI) stood at 3.6% in year-on-year variation.

Hotels and restaurants lead bankruptcies. Number of companies closing rises 5% by August

Insolvencies in Portugal increased 5.1% by August, with 55 more companies closing compared to the previous year, according to data from Iberinform. The most affected sectors were hospitality and restaurants, with a 36.2% rise in insolvencies, followed by other services (+15%) and construction (+13%). Lisbon and Porto concentrate the highest number of insolvent companies, but Aveiro, Setúbal and Faro lead the growth. In contrast, the creation of new companies fell 1.7%, with 36,047 companies established between January and August, showing a deteriorating business environment in the country.
