The Toronto International Film Festival began with the presence of the Brazilian film "Vicentina Asks for Forgiveness," by Gabriel Martins, in the official program of the event. The feature will have its gala premiere on Saturday at the Canadian festival, which is considered one of the main barometers for the awards season in world cinema.
Director Gabriel Martins, a 38-year-old from Minas Gerais, previously won over Brazilian audiences and critics with "Mars One" (2022), a drama set in Contagem, in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte. The film tells the story of a boy torn between his father's desire that he becomes a soccer player and his dream of studying astrophysics.
"Vicentina Asks for Forgiveness" represents Martins' most ambitious project to date. The selection for the Toronto Festival places the Brazilian production in a privileged position in the competition for international recognition, especially considering the relevance of the Canadian event for the awards season.
"Mars One" was a phenomenon in Brazilian audiovisual, drawing over 100,000 viewers to theaters. In June of this year, the film appeared on the list of the 100 best Brazilian films of all time in a GLOBO poll that gathered over 200 industry professionals. Gabriel Martins celebrated the selection and declared: "An immense joy."
