The Lisbon City Council was condemned to pay a fine of 463 thousand euros by the Southern Central Administrative Court, in a case that became known as "Russiagate". The final ruling confirmed that the municipal council's services sent emails containing personal data of anti-Putin activists to Russian entities.
The fine applied is almost half a million euros, with the corresponding amount for the infractions that had already expired being deducted. The process originated from an investigation that revealed the improper sharing of sensitive information.
The personal data of activists who opposed Vladimir Putin's regime was thus transmitted to entities in Russia, raising serious questions about data protection and the safety of citizens involved in activities opposing the Russian government.
This conviction represents one of the largest sanctions applied to a Portuguese municipality for violation of data protection rules, and marks the conclusion of a legal process that took place in the Lisbon administrative court.
