The Ministry of Education in Portugal is moving forward with a pilot project that aims to merge the 1st and 2nd cycles of basic education. This educational merger is scheduled to start in the 2027-2028 school year.
The Minister of Education did not specify how many schools would be covered by this pilot project. However, he revealed that he would like this test to be "expanded", suggesting ambitions for significant implementation.
The 1st cycle corresponds to primary education (1st to 4th grade), while the 2nd cycle covers the 5th and 6th grades. The merger of these two cycles would represent a significant structural change in the organization of the Portuguese education system.
