Scalding drinks can triple the risk of oesophageal cancer

ZAP Notícias10 September 2026 at 08:00

A new study concludes that the temperature and quantity of hot drinks consumed increase the likelihood of developing oesophageal cancer. Drinking very hot tea and coffee triples the risk of developing this disease.

According to the article, it is the largest study in the world so far on this relationship between hot drinks and oesophageal cancer.

Cancer specialists quoted by The Guardian said that the results show that people should allow very hot cups of tea and coffee to cool down to a comfortable drinking temperature in order to reduce the risk of the disease.

The research indicates that both the temperature of the drink and the number of very hot drinks consumed increase the likelihood of developing oesophageal cancer.
