The automotive industry is betting on a new type of electric vehicle called EREV, from the English Extended-Range Electric Vehicles, presented as the next generation of popular electric cars. This technology emerges as a solution to accelerate the transition to electric mobility.
EREV vehicles combine a large capacity battery with a gasoline engine, but the latter does not directly drive the wheels. The gasoline engine serves exclusively to produce electricity and charge the battery during the trip.
The main objective of this technology is to overcome one of the main limitations of 100% electric vehicles, namely reduced range and lack of charging infrastructure, problems that still keep many consumers from buying fully electric cars.
