Crisis at STF: understand Fachin's decisions on Moraes and Mendonça and order for trial

oglobo10 September 2026 at 04:00

The president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Edson Fachin, took a series of decisions this Wednesday to try to overcome the institutional crisis faced by the Court's ministers. Among the determinations, Fachin suspended new investigations against Supreme Court ministers without prior analysis by the Presidency, removed Alexandre de Moraes from leading the fake news inquiry, and scheduled for next Tuesday the trial on the Federal Police (PF) report that revealed messages exchanged between Moraes and banker Daniel Vorcaro.

The measures were taken in an attempt to overcome the crisis that took over the STF amid the clash between ministers Alexandre de Moraes and André Mendonça. The turbulence gained new chapters with the back-and-forth regarding the tenure of the Director-General of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues. Mendonça had determined on Tuesday the removal of Rodrigues, but Minister Flávio Dino reinstated the director's position in an order on the same Wednesday.
