The euro rose yesterday, but stayed at the 1.16 dollar barrier, on a day when Brent crude oil again exceeded 100 dollars per barrel. At 6pm, Lisbon time, the European currency was quoted at 1.1636 dollars, whereas on Tuesday, at the same time, it was trading at 1.1625 dollars.

The European Central Bank set the euro's reference exchange rate at 1.1652 dollars. During the session, the euro fluctuated between 1.1622 and 1.1653 dollars. The European currency fell against the British pound and the Japanese yen.

The euro and oil were two of the day's highlights in the financial markets, during a period of exchange rate and energy volatility.
