Joseph Weiler, professor of European Law at New York University and Harvard, was in Lisbon to participate in the conference of the European Law Unbound Society, organized by the Law Faculty of the Portuguese Catholic University. During his visit, he spoke to Dinheiro Vivo about various topics related to European identity.
Weiler made a provocative reflection on the current situation of Christianity in Europe, stating that 20 years ago the continent was living through a "cristophobia," while today it faces a "Christian amnesia." This observation comes in the context of a broader analysis of European identity and values.
With regard to transatlantic relations, Weiler discussed the relationship between Europe and the United States, also addressing the figure of Donald Trump. According to the professor, Trump may have a positive impact by fostering cohesion among the member countries of the European Union, through a kind of unifying effect in the face of his policies.
