Working in Portugal? This is the average hourly wage

Postal do Algarve9 September 2026 at 20:00

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), the average total monthly gross remuneration per worker reached 1,835 euros in the second quarter of 2026, with the base component being 1,342 euros per month. These values are gross and prior to legal deductions, representing different realities, since total remuneration includes payments beyond the base salary.

The Labour Code, in its Article 203, establishes that the normal working period cannot exceed eight hours per day and 40 hours per week, although there are shorter schedules and specific regimes provided for in the legislation. The 40 hours serve as a reference for calculations, not representing a measurement of the hours effectively worked by all workers.

In accordance with Article 271 of the Labour Code, hourly remuneration is calculated by multiplying the monthly remuneration by 12 and dividing the result by 52 times the normal weekly working period. Applying this formula to INE data for a 40-hour schedule, the 1,835 euros per month corresponds to 10.59 euros gross per hour, while the 1,342 euros of base salary represents 7.74 euros gross per hour.

The article clarifies that these results are equivalent calculations for a 40-hour schedule, and not an official statistic of the average hourly salary. The contractual value of each worker depends on their specific remuneration and their respective working schedule.

Expansion of fuel benefit can reduce IPCA by 0.15 pp ahead of electoral period

The Lula government announced the expansion of the tax benefit for gasoline and ethanol, plus an extra subsidy of R$ 1 for diesel, with the potential to reduce pump prices and IPCA by approximately 0.15 percentage points ahead of the electoral period. Market and government analysts see some disinflationary impact, albeit modest given the forecasted inflation of 5% for this year. The measure is compared to what former President Jair Bolsonaro did in 2022, when he removed fuel taxes amid rising oil prices, aiming to impact voter sentiment.
