Miguel Albuquerque, president of the Regional Government of Madeira, announced this Wednesday that the Region is developing efforts to strengthen air links with the United States. During the visit of the US ambassador to Portugal, John Joseph Arrigo, to Madeira, Albuquerque pointed to Miami as one of the destinations that could be served in the future through new air routes.

The president of the Regional Government highlighted the "excellent relationship" between Madeira and the United States, considering the country a "friend" of the Region. This diplomatic visit comes in the context of an effort to deepen ties between the archipelago and the North American power.

In addition to strengthening air links, Albuquerque also advocated for the strengthening of trade relations between Madeira and the United States, identifying this partnership as an opportunity for the economic development of the Autonomous Region.

The Popular Party (PP) considered that the secret documents about the migratory crisis in Ceuta, declassified by the Council of Ministers, reveal an alleged "state lie" by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The spokesperson for the Popular Parliamentary Group, Ester Muñoz, accused Sánchez of having "lied" for a month about the management of the migratory avalanche in the Spanish city, doing so "without shame, without blushing, with alarming coldness and lack of empathy".

Committee of the Regions welcomes EU law to curb short-term rentals and real estate business

The Committee of the Regions welcomed the new EU Affordable Housing Law, considering it an important first step to control short-term rentals and second homes in cities under housing pressure. The entity, which brings together European cities and regions in Brussels, highlighted the leadership role of cities in developing this legislation and the recognition that the proliferation of Airbnb and similar platforms exacerbates the lack of affordable housing. However, the Committee pointed out contradictions with the 2028-2034 multiannual financial package, arguing that the Commission weakens the role of local authorities in housing investments. The mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, considered the law welcome for recognizing housing as a place to live before generating profits.
