The locality of Fernão Joanes, in the council of Guarda, will hold this weekend the Transhumance Festival, an event that includes walks with sheep, ethnographic recreations, music, gastronomy and cultural entertainment. The highlight of the event is a walk with about a thousand sheep.
Transhumance arose in this region as a response to a practical need, related to the movement of flocks between pastures at different altitudes throughout the seasons of the year. Over time, this practice evolved into a tradition that is today celebrated and shared with visitors.
The municipality of Guarda thus promotes this event which aims to preserve and enhance the ethnographic and cultural heritage associated with pastoral activity, providing participants with an immersive experience in the rural traditions of the region.
