Do you do this while driving? GNR caught hundreds of drivers and fines reach €1,250 and three points on your licence

The Republican National Guard detected 278 infractions related to the improper use of mobile phones while driving between 28 August and 3 September, out of a total of 8,868 road infractions recorded across the national territory during that period. In addition to mobile phones, GNR also identified speeding, lack of mandatory periodic inspection, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without insurance.

Handling a mobile phone while driving is considered a serious traffic offence, punishable by a fine of between €250 and €1,250. The infraction also implies the loss of three points on your driving licence and can result in a driving ban of between one month and one year, applicable not only to calls, but to any handling of the device while the vehicle is in motion.

According to the National Road Safety Authority, looking at a mobile phone for just three seconds at a speed of 50 km/h means travelling about 42 metres without observing the road. The entity warns that mobile phone use can quadruple the risk of an accident and significantly increase reaction time to obstacles or unexpected situations.

The most recorded infractions during the period analysed were speeding, with 1,325 cases, and lack of mandatory periodic inspection, with 1,132 cases. A further 403 infractions related to alcohol, 341 for lack of insurance and 239 for lack of or incorrect use of seat belts or child restraint systems were also recorded.
