In a hearing held by radio CBN and newspapers O Globo, Extra, and Valor with candidates for governor of Rio de Janeiro, William Siri, from PSOL, defended that the focus of public security should be on preventing weapons and drugs from reaching communities. He criticized policies of the last 30 years which, according to him, treated Baixada Fluminense, where he was born, the favelas and peripheries as enemy territory.
Regarding police operations, Siri said he doesn't want to bring "only the police" and that a different approach from the UPP (Pacifying Police Unit) would be necessary. He said he is not certain about the use of helicopters in these operations, but made clear that the actions of the Military Police and Civil Police "will not be limited."
The PSOL candidate emphasized the retaking of all territory by the state, but said the police cannot act in the same way they did in the past, classifying that model as "absurd." For him, the state needs to be present in a different way in the communities.
