Two golden eagle chicks born at Gaia Biological Park on June 8 will be transferred to Peneda-Gerês National Park to acclimatize before definitive integration into their natural habitat. The birds were raised by their parents at the park, something considered fundamental for the preservation of their natural behaviors.
The chicks' parents were brought to Gaia Biological Park in 2022, as part of an ex situ breeding program proposed by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF). This program arose due to the threat faced by the existing golden eagle population.
The initiative is coordinated by ICNF in collaboration with the Spanish non-governmental organization GREFA – Grupo de Rehabilitación de la Fauna Autóctona y su Hábitat. The main objective of this program is to contribute to the reinforcement of the golden eagle population in the Gerês-Xurés region, in protected territory.
