Europeans want a stronger Europe, but "no longer believe it is possible"

CNN Portugal9 September 2026 at 13:58

Europeans express the desire for a stronger and more integrated Europe, according to a recent study. However, the same research reveals that European citizens no longer believe this goal is achievable. The lack of confidence in the future of the European project is evident among the continent's population, creating a paradox between aspirations and expectations.

The study indicates that this absence of trust does not necessarily equate to a rejection of the European project. Europeans continue, to a large extent, to value their belonging to the European Union and the benefits it provides, even while feeling that a more robust Europe is a distant or unattainable goal.

This apparent contradiction suggests that there is a divorce between what citizens desire for the future of Europe and their perception of the viability of these aspirations. The distance between what is idealized and what is perceived as possible fuels a feeling of frustration that does not, however, translate into a distancing from the European project.

In the morning, he participates in a motociata with supporters to the city center, on a route of about ten kilometers, followed by a rally on an electric trio truck.
