Brussels is moving forward with new rules to address the housing crisis in the European Union. The objective is to create a common framework that allows identifying areas under strong housing pressure and establishing conditions so that Member States can adopt specific measures to tackle the problem.
The European Commission warned that people in what it designated as "ordinary jobs" — including nurses, teachers and police officers — often cannot afford to live in the areas where they work, due to the significant rise in rents and house prices.
The new rules aim to create mechanisms to identify the geographical areas most affected by housing pressure, allowing for more targeted intervention by national governments.
The package of measures aims to give Member States tools to implement rent control policies and other measures to support housing access, especially in areas where demand clearly exceeds the available supply.
