Heat dome between September 12 and 15: mainland Portugal prepares for a new general temperature rise

Meteored Portugal9 September 2026 at 12:33

Portugal is preparing for a new sharp rise in temperatures starting from the weekend. Between September 12 and 15, a heat dome may settle over the Iberian Peninsula, with the peak of the episode expected on September 14. The very hot air mass will begin to gain ground over the region from Friday, September 11.

This Wednesday, September 9, will still be marked by temperatures mostly close to the climatological average, although significant regional differences will exist. In certain locations, temperatures may fall 2 to 3 degrees below usual, while in others there will be positive anomalies of similar magnitude.

The contrast between the cooler coast and hotter interior will be evident, maintaining a relatively normal thermal pattern before the arrival of the hot air mass that will cause the heat dome in the following days.
