The Portuguese Government approved a dispatch to move forward with studies aimed at bringing water from the Castelo de Bode dam to the South Bank of the Tagus. The objective is to reduce dependence on the Tagus-Sado aquifer and find new water supply solutions.
The measure comes in a context of a recent supply crisis in Almada, which highlighted the limitations of the current water supply system in the region. The situation created pressure on authorities to find safer and more sustainable alternatives.
The project is also linked to the future airport planned for Alcochete, which is expected to significantly increase water demand in the region. The predicted growth associated with this infrastructure reinforces the need to guarantee new supply sources.
The studies must be completed within 120 days, at which time the Government should evaluate the proposed solutions and decide on the next steps for the project's implementation.
