State of Rio is convicted for brutality in death during Jacarezinho Massacre

The State of Rio de Janeiro was ordered to pay R$150 thousand in compensation to each family member of Jonas do Carmo dos Santos, one of the victims of the Jacarezinho Massacre. The decision was rendered by the 9th Chamber of Public Law of the Court of Justice of the State of Rio de Janeiro (TJRJ).

The episode occurred in May 2021, when a police operation resulted in the death of 28 people. At the time, this action was considered the deadliest ever recorded in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Jonas do Carmo dos Santos was one of the victims of the operation. The lawsuit seeks compensation for the damages caused to his family due to the brutality of the case.

The conviction represents a judicial recognition of the violence committed during the operation, which generated strong national and international repercussions.
