Trump hails German far-right's victory in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday

Jornal Económico9 September 2026 at 10:40

Donald Trump hailed on Tuesday the far-right's victory in Germany, referring to what he classified as "a very good night" for the "Populist Party," in a post on the social media platform Truth Social. The President of the United States stated that Germans are "tired of the absolutely horrible rules and regulations on immigration" and that the party is "on the rise."

The party in question is the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which won around 44% of the votes in Saxony-Anhalt's regional elections, against only 17% for Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservatives (CDU). This deprived region of the former GDR thus gave an overwhelming victory to the anti-immigration and pro-Russia force.

These results represent a political earthquake in Germany, with the far-right in a favorable position to govern a region for the first time since 1945. Trump also adapted his "MAGA" slogan to "MGGA" (Make Germany Great Again) at the end of his post.

The AfD's electoral triumph was also hailed by figures close to Trump, including Richard Grenell, the former U.S. ambassador to Germany, and Elon Musk, who responded with a resounding "Well done!" to a post by Alice Weidel, the party's co-leader.
