The Azorean students managed to reverse the downward trend in school results between 2022 and 2025, significantly improving their performance in the three areas assessed by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA): Science, Mathematics and Reading. This improvement contrasts with the trend recorded nationally, where results tended to fall during the same period.
According to PISA 2025 data, students from the Autonomous Region of the Azores showed consistent progress in the three assessed subjects. The recorded recovery represents a positive reversal compared to the region's previous results.
However, despite this favorable evolution, the Azores continue to be below the Portuguese national average and below the average of the countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). In other words, although there was significant improvement, the region has not yet reached the average levels of the country or the developed countries assessed.
