Your appliance broke down? EU repair directive obliges manufacturers to repair it

Euronews Portugal9 September 2026 at 11:36

A new European directive on the right to repair has come into force, obliging manufacturers to repair broken electronic equipment instead of replacing it. The measure aims to promote a more sustainable economy and reduce waste.

The directive imposes on manufacturers the obligation to offer repair services for electronics, covering household appliances and other equipment. This change represents a significant shift in the way companies must approach the life cycle of their products.

The main objective of this legislation is to reduce household appliance waste in the European Union by 35 million tonnes. The aim is to decrease the environmental impact associated with disposing of functional but broken equipment.

Consumers now have a legally protected right to demand the repair of their appliances, even after the warranty period ends. The directive also aims to make repair a more accessible and economical option compared to purchasing new equipment.
