Minister André Mendonça, of the Supreme Federal Court, revoked the preventive detentions of the former attorney general of the INSS, Virgílio Antônio Ribeiro de Oliveira Filho, and his wife, Thaisa Hoffmann Jonasso. Both were targets of Operation Sem Desconto, which investigates billion-dollar fraud in retirements.
When deciding to soften the precautionary measures, Mendonça argued that the current phase of the investigations no longer requires total restriction of liberty of those investigated. The new precautionary measures imposed include electronic ankle monitor monitoring and prohibition of leaving the country.
In a series of six rulings referring to Operation Sem Desconto, the rapporteur also authorized the removal of electronic ankle monitors from other targets of the operation, including former Minister of Labor and Welfare of the Bolsonaro government, José Carlos Oliveira.
