Lisbon Stock Exchange defies Europe driven by energy. Galp and EDPR rise more than 1%

Jornal de Negócios9 September 2026 at 08:24

The Lisbon Stock Exchange defied the European trend this Wednesday, driven by the energy sector. While the main European stock exchanges were recording declines, the Portuguese index managed to stay in positive territory.

The gains were mainly driven by the energy sector, with Galp and EDP Renováveis (EDPR) each rising more than 1%. These two companies were among the main contributors to the positive performance of the Portuguese market.

The table of Lisbon-listed companies was divided, with eight companies in positive territory, seven in negative territory and only one still unchanged. This distribution reflects the lack of consensus among investors in the Portuguese market that day.

Inditex warns that the Middle East will continue to pressure its margins

Inditex warned that the logistics surcharges resulting from tensions in the Middle East will continue to pressure its gross margin during the second half of the year. The company issued this warning to analysts, after presenting first-half results in which it earned 2,800 million euros (+6.8%) and generated revenue of 19,755 million (+7.6%), explaining that disruptions in the Middle East region raised transportation and procurement costs during the first half of the year, and that, due to the time lag with which these expenses are reflected in the cost of goods sold, part of the impact will continue to be felt in the coming months.

Pensioners receiving up to this amount will receive an extra payment this year: find out if you are among those covered

The Portuguese Government announced that it will grant an extraordinary supplement to pensioners with pensions up to €1,611.13 (corresponding to three times the IAS value planned for 2026), to be paid together with the December pension. The measure, with an exceptional character and not incorporated into the monthly pension value, is aimed at beneficiaries with lower incomes, with the amount being higher the lower the pension. The estimated impact on public accounts is around €400 million. The announcement came simultaneously with an IRS reduction with retroactive effects from January 2026, although, unlike this, the pensioner supplementation is one-off. The final criteria and specific amounts have not yet been disclosed, and are expected to be presented during the week of September 12.
