The Timorese non-governmental organization La'o Hamutuk released a report today in which it identifies obstacles to the diversification of Timor-Leste's economy. The document points out that the lack of consistent political commitment is one of the main barriers to the development of economic sectors beyond oil.
According to the report, the scarcity of qualified human resources in the country constitutes another significant challenge for economic diversification. This limitation affects Timor-Leste's capacity to develop productive activities outside the oil sector.
Excessive bureaucracy and the fragility of the private sector are also identified as factors that hinder the diversification of the Timorese economy. These elements contribute to an environment that is not conducive to investment and the growth of new economic areas.
The La'o Hamutuk report comes at a time when Timor-Leste is seeking to reduce its dependence on oil revenues and develop other sources of income for the country.
