The beachfront mansion of actor Nicolas Cage, located in Malibu, California, suffered severe damage after an enormous sinkhole opened at the property's entrance. The hole, estimated at approximately 9 by 9 meters, completely destroyed the garage access area and advanced onto a stretch of the street.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, when firefighters were called to respond to a suspected gas pipeline rupture. Upon arriving at the scene, the team found that the mansion's entrance had collapsed. The gas company was also called and is working on repairing the pipeline.
The hole was apparently caused by coastal erosion, a recurring problem in coastal areas of California. Images from the scene show the asphalt and concrete completely ruptured, with part of the street giving way. A chemical toilet installed on the property was dragged into the sinkhole.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. The property, valued in the millions, was in a risky area due to its proximity to the ocean, where coastal erosion represents a constant threat to beachfront constructions.
